Cosy Care Weighted Blankets Washing & Drying Guidelines
How to wash a weighted blanket?
To keep your weighted blanket in tip-top shape, wash separately, on a cool wash with gentle detergent (no bleach or fabric softener) and either hang dry (preferred method) or tumble dry on low only. If your blanket is over 7KG / 15lbs, be kind to your home washer and take the weighted blanket to the launderette and use their largest, commercial size machines for washing and drying (low setting), following the same instructions as above.
Why is hang drying preferred
The fabrics can be machine dried on a low setting however the fabric will stay nicer much longer when gently laundered. If you choose to hang dry your weighted blanket, hang it evenly over your laundry line or a tub in order to help the blanket maintain it’s shape. When hanging, do not hang from one end instead balance the entire blanket over. The good news with hang-drying is that most washing machines do a really great job during the spin cycle of getting most of the water out, so drying shouldn’t take too long.
Say No to - Detergent, fabric softener, bleach
For best results, use only a gentle detergent, with no fabric softener or dryer sheets, and only non-chlorine bleach when necessary. Fabric softeners can build up in the blanket making it less soft (or even rough and scratchy, depending on the fabric). Chlorine will in time, break down the fibres inside the blanket. If you have a large weighted blanket that you only want to spot clean, use a toothbrush to help scrub out the stain.
Do not iron the weighted blanket!
You can buy covers for the blankets and are similar to duvet covers in that they protect the blanket and they can be ironed if needed (covers only)
Special tips for Covers
Minky is a fabulous fabric that washes easily and comes out just as soft as when you put it in. Washing separately is best advice here as it stops any friction with other laundry items. If you do have a stubborn stain, use non-chlorine bleach or an oxygen bleach.
Many covers are made with 100% Cotton. For optimum results wash and dry separately or small loads. Large loads can create extra heat or agitation which wears on the blanket cover. To keep colours bright, add 1/4 cup of vinegar to the wash. Cold Wash is best - Wash Temperature Max 30C.
